S&ME Industrial Hygiene Class Equipment Donation

S&ME Mike Garrett

Mike Garrett, CIH, of S&ME volunteered to teach a full-day program on Industrial Hygiene at the Advanced MESH (Manager of Environmental Safety and Health) training program held in Charlotte during June 2007. Sponsored by the Safety and Health Council of North Carolina, the North Carolina Department of Labor, and the North Carolina State University-Industrial Extension Service, the program was presented to 20+ environmental and safety professionals, representing a wide range of industries throughout North Carolina. Those in attendance had already earned their MESH Certificates and were advancing to more complex topics.

The focus of Mike's industrial hygiene program included both principles and hands-on activities associated with occupational exposures in an industrial setting. Various types of environmental rental equipment for the class were donated by Enviro-Equipment, Inc., including an OHD Fit Tester, a Casella Microdust Pro, a Dosebadge Kit, a CEL 430 Sound Level Meter as well as a RAE Systems IAQRAE and a MiniRAE 2000 PID. Mike demonstrated testing scenarios for noise, dust and other environmental pollutants that might pose a threat to workers. In addition, he lectured on the requirement for using personal protective equipment (PPE), the application of the different types of equipment, assessing the need for personal protective equipment, and methods for fit testing of respiratory protection.

The MESH Certificate Series is designed for individuals responsible for environmental or safety programs at work who wish to improve their practical knowledge while earning a valuable credential. The certification is awarded after successful completion of 100 training hours. Advanced MESH training provides hands-on approaches and applications to prevent and control hazards and environmental impacts in the workplace.
