Remediation Equipment Purchasing

QUESTION: What information do I need to provide to EEI when purchasing a remediation system?

Answer:

  • Will all the equipment need to be new, or can used equipment be included in the system where available?
  • Is there an existing electrical service at your site? If so, what power is available at your site? What voltage? What Phase? How many Amps is the service and what is the current load? Do you need a specific short circuit rating?
  • Will your system need to be UL Listed/Inspected? If so, do you want just the control panel listed, or do you want the entire system inspected?
  • Will the system need to be explosion proof? If so, which class, division and group? What are the constituents that require the explosion proof rating?
  • How do you want the system mounted? On a skid, in a building or in a mobile cargo trailer? Also specify any size restrictions. If in a building or trailer…
    • Lights? Exhaust Fan? Heat?
  • Do you have any drawings of the system? Customer provided Process and Instrumentation, Electrical, Layout and other drawings are always helpful and ensure that we quote and build the exact system you want.

Soil Vapor Extraction and Dual Phase Extraction Systems:

  • What air flow (in cfm or scfm) at what vacuum (in Hg" or WC") will the blower need to achieve?
  • Do you need a moisture separator? If so…
    • How many gallons?
    • Gravity Drain, High Level Shut Down or Pump Down? If Pump Down…
      • What pressure (in Feet TDH or PSI) at what flow rate (in GPM) for the pump?
  • Do you want an inline particulate filter (recommended) and an exhaust silencer?
  • Do you want a bleed air / dilution air valve? If so, does it need an inlet filter silencer?
  • Which safety/failsafe features do you want?
    • Vacuum Relief Valve – Specify Vacuum Setting
    • High Vacuum Switch On Blower Vacuum Line – Specify Vacuum Setting
    • High Pressure Switch on Blower Exhaust – Specify Pressure Setting
    • Low Vacuum Switch on Blower Vacuum Line – Specify Vacuum Setting
    • High Temperature Switch on Blower Exhaust Line – Specify Temperature Setting
  • How will you connect this system to your wells? How many wells are there? What size are the wells? Will the system need a manifold?
    • What diameter connections, and how many of each? What diameter header for the manifold? What type of pipe (PVC (40 or 80) or Galvanized Steel)?
    • What flow control devices do you want on each connection / manifold leg? Ball Valve? Gate Valve? Butterfly Valve?
    • What if any gauges or flowmeters do you want on each connection / manifold leg?
      • Vacuum Gauge – specify scale.
      • Flow Meter – specify scale.
      • Temperature Gauge – specify scale.
    • What if any sample ports do you want on each connection / manifold leg? Specify valve diameter and barb size.

Air Sparge Systems:

  • What air flow (in cfm or scfm) at what pressure (in PSI or WC") will the compressor need to achieve?
  • Will the system need an after cooler or heat exchanger? If so, what is the desired temperature at the outlet?
  • Do you want an intake particulate filter (recommended) and an exhaust silencer?
  • Do you want a bleed air / blow off valve? If so, does it need a silencer?
  • Which safety/failsafe features do you want?
    • Pressure Relief Valve – Specify Setting
    • High Pressure Switch – Specify Pressure Setting
    • High Temperature Switch – Specify Temperature Setting
  • How will you connect this system to your wells? How many wells are there? What size are the wells? Will the system need a manifold?

Air Strippers:

  • What contaminates in what concentrations (in parts per billion) are you trying to strip?
  • Do you have a material preference? Stainless Steel, Poly or Aluminum.
  • What is the average water temperature? Air Temperature?
  • What is the flow rate (in gallons per minute)?
  • Will the system need an influent pump? If so, please specify the flow rate (in gpm) at what pressure (in feet TDH or PSI).
  • Will the system be gravity drained, or will it need an effluent pump? For an effluent pump please specify the flow rate (in gpm) at what pressure (in feet TDH or PSI).
  • Which safety/failsafe features do you want?
    • Sump High Level Alarm
    • Low Pressure Switch – specify setting
    • High Pressure Switch – specify setting
  • Do you need bag filters before or after the air stripper and if so, what micron bags and how many?

Oil / Water Separators

  • What is the flow rate (in gallons per minute)?
  • Do you have a material preference? Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel or Fiberglass.
  • Will the OWS need an influent pump? If so, please specify the flow rate (in gpm) at what pressure (in feet TDH or PSI).
  • Will the OWS be gravity drained, or will it need an effluent pump? For an effluent pump please specify the flow rate (in gpm) at what pressure (in feet TDH or PSI).
  • Will the OWS need a sump? If so, how many gallons and do you want a high level alarm float in the sump?
  • Will the OWS need a sludge chamber? If so, what capacity?
  • Will the OWS need a product storage tank? If so, how many gallons and do you want a high level alarm float?

Liquid or Vapor Phase Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC)

  • What is the flow rate? For liquid phase carbon state in gallons per minute. For vapor phase carbon state in cfm or scfm.
  • What pressure do the vessels have to be rated for? Specify in PSI.
  • Do you have a material preference for the vessel construction? Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel or Fiberglass.
  • Virgin or Reactivated Carbon?
  • Do you need bag filters before the liquid phase carbon? If so, please specify bag micron and quantity.

Thermal or Catalytic Oxidizers

  • What is the air flow rate in CFM or SCFM?
  • What contaminates in what concentrations (in parts per billion)?
  • What is the air temperature at the inlet?
  • What destruction efficiency do you need?
  • Do you prefer Thermal or Catalytic?
  • Electrical or Gas Fired?
  • Do you need an extraction system to go along with this oxidizer or will the oxidizer be fed by an existing extraction system? If you have an existing extraction system, please provide as much information as possible about it. If your oxidizer needs an extraction system, please reference the section on soil vapor extraction.
